In the same vein as the geek-crazed mecca that is the San Diego Comic-Con, the genii over at world-renowned film magazine EMPIRE have organised their own London-based event each year - Movie-Con; about to start it's third event...tonight!!!!
Well, (breathe, just breathe), after the salivatingly-good plethora of treats last year, I can guarantee that this event is going to be a jam-packed weekend of motion picture gems, which includes a kick-off party at the BFI after a screening of Sly Stallone's new testosterone-fuelled outing, The Expendables. What more, we're being treated to evening screenings of The Hole 3D, 22 Bullets, Despicable Me 3D and Cyrus (all open to the public). The event itself will screen some exciting tidbits and exclusive footage of future films Cowboys and Aliens, Let Me In, Paul (so exciting!), The Green Hornet, Battle: Los Angeles, Thor, Tron:Legacy, Machete (that's right, this year's bit that I'm eagerly anticipating as much last year's Avatar footage), The Social Network and Salt, as well as a bunch of other uber-cool footage. On top of all the aforementioned, we also get the film-critic legend Kim Newman's bastard-hard movie quiz and a load of spot-prizes.
Last year also uncovered some totally rock n' roll appearances, namely the arrival of Robert frickin' Downey Jr (TWICE!!!) and more-Lundun-than-a-guv'na-geeza Guy Ritchie, not to mention Terry Gilliam, Jonah Hill, McLovin' (a.ka. Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and hotter-than-an-IED Kathryn Bigelow. This year, those Na'Vi folk (term of endearment) at EMPIRE are giving us Edgar Wright (the comic genius behind Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and upcoming Scott Pilgrim) and Wallander himself, the maestro of Shakespeare, Kenneth Branagh. In the words of an American teenager - it's gonna be off the frickin' chain, dude!
I'll let you know how it goes. To the BFI and beyond!
