Oscars Results

Quite predictably, after winning the BAFTA, Cesar, Critics Choice, Golden Globe, Director's Guild, Producer's Guild, SAG, and numerous other critic's accolades Argo has won Best Picture in the 85th Academy Awards - this year officially called The Oscars. Ben Affleck's CIA-thriller saw the Agency turn to Hollywood for help with a rescue/extraction mission in Iran, and given th operation's success, the studios and bigwigs were bound to applause the film's premise. It's not everyday Hollywood studios help resolve a hostage crisis! Of course, cynicism aside, Argo has some terrific performances and is an extremely enjoyable film - I recall giving it 4/5, and Ben Affleck is now one of the most sought-after directors working, so fair play to him. Total shock he wasn't nonimated for Best Director, so implausible in fact, that we can assume he pissed in someone's soup to get so blatantly overlooked.

Daniel Day-Lewis has made Oscar history and won his third award for Best Actor (the first man in history - for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood & Lincoln), and no surprises for Anne Hathaway, Christoph Waltz, Amour, and Skyfall for best song. Slight surprise at the lack of recognition for Zero Dark Thirty which was going to go either way - Oscar clearly weren't so impressed by Bigelow's latest military epic, and also at Ang Lee's Best Director win for Life of Pi which is completely deserved given the overall value of the film. Tarantino's win for best original screenplay for Django Unchained is great news given this reviewer read it over a year ago and loved every word,

The main winners were Life of Pi (with 4) and Argo (with 3).
